13807 Exptl. Dept. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls}17/KW. 20th July, 1934. Messrs. Ransome & Marles Ltd., Newark-on-Trent. Dear Mr. Hickling, Many thanks for the trouble you took on my behalf the other day. I gave the Hoffmann bearing to our metallurgist and he finds that the cracks in the surface due to overload are very bad slag lines. Slag lines do not only exist at these places but throughout the rest of the outer race. For interest we are carrying out a similar test on one of your bearings to compare the structure of the material. I will let you know the result of this when I can. I have to go over to France on Monday for about five weeks and so shall not be able to come over to Newark to see the result of running a 4MD Bearing at 4500 revs. Mr. Tresilian however would like to come over one day soon to talk to you about the use of needle bearings in Aircraft engines. Perhaps you would give him a ring to tell him some time which will be suitable to you. He would also very much like to see the race you showed me for the Gnome variable pitch propellor, and would like to discuss this type of propellor with you. Yours sincerely, FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LIMITED. | ||
