GOSHAWK. GEARBOX.
RE SECOND MOTION SHAFT.
--------------------
I had overlooked the fact that the gear on the second motion shaft is in constant mesh with the Idler gear of the Reverse unit, and that no sliding gears are slid into mesh with it under any conditions.
In view of the foregoing there is no doubt at all in my mind that the second motion shaft carrying this gear should be made in nickel steel - the Brinell figure suitable being 286 - 311.
Since this gear is working always with a hardened gear the shape of the Pinion will not deteriorate, as the hardened gear will maintain the correct shape on the Pinion.
