40/50 Controllable Shock Dampers.

Many thanks for your Br.1/H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} 23.4.34. We are pleased you were able to overcome the complaints, but we cannot understand it.

You say that after getting the air out of the control system and replenishing the pump unit with oil, the knocks disappeared, and the control would then function in any position including the maximum. Do you mean that the control was not working before ?

The best thing to do is to connect a 20 HP. oil gauge, reading to 40 lbs., to the control system from the junction piece in the frame. The hand control on the top of the column should register in the minimum position 1 lb. and in the maximum 25 lbs., when the rear road wheels are travelling at 10 m.p.h. For the governor range in the minimum position 80 m.p.h. should register approx. 14 lbs. on the gauge. I will see that a Depot Sheet is circulated to deal with the shock damper control system.

With regard to the knocks, they sound even more elusive. As the control system is quite separate from the dampers it is hard to appreciate that an air lock in the control system would cause a knocking noise in the dampers.

I should like you to find out if the dampers themselves were replenished with oil, and if so how much and the mileage of each car.

With regard to my coming to London to hear the actual noise, I will leave this to your judgement. The old 2 valve shock damper had noise complaints for such a period that we are very anxious that any complaint which is liable to continue that appears with the new type damper should be dealt with seriously from the very first.
