R.R. 235A (100 T) (S.H. 159, 11-8-20) G.{Mr Griffiths - Chief Accountant / Mr Gnapp} 2800 TO HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} FROM R.{Sir Henry Royce} Copy to G.I. RM{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} BH OK ORIGINAL STEERING. LS430 T8430 We are very anxious to find the instantaneous value of the co-efficient of friction, and we think a very simple rig would be an eccentric with a con. rod representing the longitudinal tube. The con. rod would have a set up spring, and the eccentric could have a suitable short stroke adjustable, so as to give a known force on the ball. A spring could be used to hold the steering wheel against the stop. The record of this spring pressure could be obtained for different speeds of the eccentric, and different boxes. Such a rig would not cost very much, and might give us some valuable information. At the same time naturally the best test will be road impressions. I am anxiously awaiting a move on this. Will DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} please say what can be done with the 20.HP? Let Mr. Hardy try to get on a low efficiency nut and damped pendulum lever.
