With reference to R4/M16428, we had considered that the steering column could be dismounted without removing the engine. This is the object of the tapering on the lower sides of the box.
It was intended that the sheet metal bracket fitting to the frame should come down with the box, and the clearance between the steering box and the web on the crankcase was just enough to enable the box to be pushed sideways so that it could begin to be turned round about an approximately vertical axis.
We made a series of diagrams on the layout, and from this we came to the conclusion that this could be done.
