(4) Phantom III - Cost Reduction. The reduction of costs should be divided under two headings:- (1) Alterations not requiring full testing. (2) More extensive changes involving 15,000 miles test. Action to be taken accordingly. Phantom III - Future Development. It is agreed that Phantom III will be re-designed at some future time and in connection with this Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} asks for a 3 speed gearbox integral with engine unit. Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} to put up a memo on this point to Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} to show why 3 speeds should be O.K. Experimental Department are rigging up a Phantom III with Packard 3 speed box bolted to rear end of engine with tail extension to propeller shaft carrying brake servo. 25/30 HP. Engine. The modification for improving the exhaust valve guide cooling has given a negative result. Requires further consideration. Wraith Engine. It was agreed to order crankcase castings for Wraith experimental engines from outside sources in ordinary aluminium alloy instead of R.R. alloy, so as to start testing from the beginning in the former material. Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} RHC.{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer} and E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} to draw up a balance sheet of costs comparing cast iron and aluminium constructions for future Wraith engine. Design to complete scheme for transferring dynamo to steering side and modify position of steering box as required. Further checks to be taken to verify cylinder wear and centrifuged dry liners to be considered if necessary for Wraith. | ||
