To Er from Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} c. By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} Hsy [Struck through] Handwritten: Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} x202 Oil Leaks in Bentley Rear Axles. Referring to By/19/N.17.7.34, in July of last year we made N. Sch.3785, shewing a proposal for increasing the drain from the oil catcher at the hub. We understand this has now been tried on a 10,000 miles car and contributes towards the cure of this trouble. Some little while ago we were shown two modifications to the thrust bearing housing, suggested by Experimental Department, to facilitate the return of oil to the centre casing having passed through the thrust race. These modifications were to increase the area of the drain holes at the bottom of the thrust bearing housing by substituting a slot for the three drilled holes, and secondly to provide an air vent on the top of the thrust housing by milling a flat in the housing across one of the holes at the end of the locking slots. We agreed to these modifications being put into the 10,000 miles car and now understand that the combination resulted in no complaints being made about this 10,000 miles car. We suggest that these modifications should be put into production as soon as possible, and send herewith, attached to By's copy N. Sch.4142 shewing the modifications to the thrust bearing housing.
