HYDRAULIC SHOCK DAMPERS.

Replying to BJ12/E8.7.26. The following is the Expl: Department's information on this matter :-

(1) A standardisation sheet has been completely signed up for the hydraulic dampers on the front of the 20 HP. A standardisation sheet has been signed by all the Officials except B.J. for hydraulic dampers on the front of the Phantom. B.J. stated he wished to hold up his signature until the 10,000 miles test had been completed on this item.

(2) Although there have been numerous small alterations they are mostly to avoid air locks or leakage etc; they do not affect the principle or the working of the damper.

(3) We consider that as regards the 20 HP. car there is nothing to prevent the hydraulic dampers being fitted to the front. They have completed 10,000 miles on a covered type of car.

As regards the Phantom, the hydraulic dampers are fitted to 12-EX car which we expect will leave for France in a week or 10 days time.

12-EX car is an open touring car, not a closed car. When we discussed this point with B.J. at the Midland Hotel we agreed that the dampers should be tried on a closed car, at the same time we endeavoured to make it clear that the weight of the car will not affect the test as regards running in France. Our view is that it is necessary for the shock dampers to be tried
