To Roy.{Sir Henry Royce} from Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/FJH.{Fred J. Hardy - Chief Dev. Engineer} c. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} c. By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} c. RHC.{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer} c. Mx.{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer} 25/30.HP. STEERING CAMS. Re your memo Roy.{Sir Henry Royce}1/MG.23.6.37 and letter from the Adamant Engineering Co. dated 22.6.37, we do not agree that the cams now being rejected by our Production Dept. are better in every respect than the original sample cams supplied to the Experimental Dept. We did not receive any experimental cams on which it was not possible to obtain meshing between the cam and roller tighter in the centre than elsewhere. This is not possible on the majority of cams rejected by Production. We did receive one or two cams which had points of zero backlash either side of the centre and this was pointed out to the Adamant Co. Their reply was that we could expect production supplies to be better, as they would make the necessary jigs and measuring apparatus when we ordered the cams in quantities. They have not yet made these jigs. We are making a mandril which, we believe, will enable cams to be rectified. We consider that this should be adequate compensation.
