contd :- -7- Gear change mechanism. This has functioned quite O.K. Vibrations are felt on the lever at high speeds. Servo and gears. The servo has remained in a very good condition, it has operated quite satisfactory up to the present mileage. There has been no perceptible wear take place in the servo link mechanism. It has not been necessary to readjust the cams. Pedals. The bearings of these are good, no noticeable wear has taken place. Starter Motor. This has not worked at all satisfactory, it has been necessary to start up the engine with starting handle on many occasions. We obtained a Bendix drive from the Paris Depot, but found that we could not use it, owing to modifications to Bendix drives having taken place. Rear axle. The rear axle has developed a growl on picking up from low speeds, and at high speeds it is noisy. We have had no further oil leak since checking up the oil level. The O.S. bracket holding pull off springs for brake has been slightly bent over by stones hitting same. These appear to be on the weak side. Rear brakes mechanism & drums. The rear brakes have continued to squeak through the test, it has varied. On some occasions it has been bad - others hardly perceptible. The braking has remained good. We have had grit get between the dust covers and edge of drums which caused a bad screeching noise. Examination of brakes found them to be in a very good condition. Dust and grit had been washed inside of covers but had not got on to the brakes. There has been no trouble with brake mechanism and condition of drums are very good. Rear road springs and shackles bearings. Upon examination at this mileage, we found the N.S. spring had its top leaf cracked half way across 5¼" rear of centre bolt and 5th. leaf from top broken right across 2½" rear of centre bolt. We have fitted a new spring of the same poundage. The spring shackle pin at rear end had worn considerably. The spring clips on either springs had remained tight. We could not find any cracks on the O.S. spring. We have been continually hitting buffers during the continuation of the test. Rear shockdampers. We have dismantled the shock dampers.
