X 3381 REPORT ON AMERICAN CRANKSHAFTS WITH FLAWS.

We received 8 Crankshafts from America with labels attached stating where they had flaws.

Capt: Stent R.A.F., Lieut. Dall R.A.F., Mr. Bailey and myself examined the flaws on these Crankshafts. In appearance they are similar to what we get on the crankshafts here. Lieut. Dall and myself went over each crankshaft and filed the crank in each flaw to see how deep it was. We found on the cranks numbered 562, 539, 597, 530 and 632 that we were able to remove all signs of the flaw before we had filed a flat which reduced the diameter less than .010". On another crank numbered 658 we were able to remove the crack but the flat reduced the diameter of the crank by .012". Lieut: Dall agreed that this shaft could be used. Crankshafts numbered 29 and 583 were definitely scrapped.

We ought to let our people know in America that if the crack can be filed out without reducing the diameter of the crankshaft more than .010" the shaft will be accepted by the A.I.D. subject of course to the shaft being O.K. after the endurance test. We suggest that the 6 American Crankshafts which we have which have been passed by the A.I.D. should be finished off at our Works and put into engines. We suggest using one of them on an experimental engine.
