X.3553. RE NEW 40/50 H.P. CHASSIS FOR WEST WITTERINGHenry Royce's home town.

We return herewith four specimens of brown and khaki colours and one sample specimen of brown leather which we received from you in connection with the above.

We further attach two papers shewing water colour tints numbered 1 to 8. The colour Mr. Royce would like is really a buff without any suggestion of green in it, that is to say, a warm colour. The particular tint he has suggested of this we shew as No.5. The idea is to get a nice bright looking car which will not shew mud or dust so easily as the lead colour, and will not have the drab dirty uninteresting appearance of khaki or any of its variants.

Mr. Royce, however, wishes you to make the final decision in Derby.

You will of course understand that these water colour specimens are probably too light in depth of colour when applied to such a large thing as a car, but it is hoped that they convey the nature of the colour it is desired to use.

Referring again to these specimens, it should be noted that No.6 is considered too warm, and No.8 too cold, and having too much of the green tinge in it. No. 5 is thought to come between the two former.

The leather upholstery of the car should be black.

E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer}
