The explosions seemed to be caused by one or two misfires and then one slow burning charge which is burning when exhaust valve opens and sends a flame into the silencer. If you go along the road and short a plug or even switch on and off you do not get a bang but if you retard and switch on battery only you can get one every time.

Explosions are also worse with a cut-out open which is we believe due to the changes in the cylinders being weakened by air drawn back through the exhaust valve. We also get explosions when the throttle is opened gently after coasting, this we consider is due to the petrol not commencing to flow immediately and weak charge going into the cylinders."
