'SS{S. Smith}' SPARE WHEEL CARRIER (N.SCH.2760)

The first carrier made up to the above scheme only for 'SS{S. Smith}' chassis, shews up several faults, although the general design is agreed to be very satisfactory.

(a) The bracket carried on the special spare wheel carrier crossmember is wrong; allowance has not been made for clearance between the wheel hub and the bracket when the wheel is swivelled into or away from its bolted up position. The wheel fouls the bracket very badly at A.{Mr Adams} The path of a point on the hub X. passes through the points X¹, X² which as shewn, lie in the bracket. The parallel portion of this bracket at B. is not useful; the bracket will have to be altered somewhat as shown on the attached print. The taper portion C. is continued, cutting out the parallel portion altogether.

(b) The rear end of the dummy hub is distorted at F.{Mr Friese} rather badly when the inner wheel is fastened up tight. The section is rather small here, it appears that it should be increased.

(c) The small spring ring 'K' used as a stop for the inner hand nut is very easily forced out of its groove if the nut is turned too far back. It appears to be rather difficult to make an efficient stop without increasing the cost materially - possibly a thicker spring ring in a contd:-
