X4257 To Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} & EP.{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} from R.{Sir Henry Royce} c. to CJ. BJ. c. to PN.{Mr Northey} BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} RS{Sir Henry Royce's Secretary}/M16.7.23. RE. 20 HP. X4256 X4257 Mr. PN.{Mr Northey} told me that frequently the brakes on this car are spoilt by over-oiling the back axle, and suggested a reduction in the level. Personally I have never met with this trouble, but I do know that it is the practice in London to continually be adding oil to back axles much more frequently than they require it. Also the oil they put in back axles may be too thick to drain out of our oil catching reservoir by the pipes. We think this fault ought to be avoided by the correct level of the oil, oil of reasonable viscosity, less frequent filling, and the certain use of the over-flow plug, which latter I doubt.
