Contd. -4- EFC3/T22.9.24. As stated in our previous report, a move had been made to get the Exide Co. to bring their 20 HP. battery into line with the P & R, e.g. to make it exactly suit the available dimensions and also to arrange for the cells to be with those of that other battery, similarly disposed and interchangeable to facilitate the problem of spares and replacements. Upon further consideration of this matter and it being understood that R.{Sir Henry Royce} is now interested in this one-piece six-compartment moulded cell case, our views are somewhat modified, and it is considered that we might at this point arrange for standardisation of this item, in view of the accumulated experimental running of batteries so contained. Mr. Minchin of the P & R Co. has recently paid us a visit and he has stated that he will approach the Exide Co. with a view to supplying them with these battery cases, the idea being that the Exide Co. shall make up batteries similar to those of P & R, but putting in, of course, their own internal features. Though separate cells would not in the nature of things now be interchangeable, nevertheless cell elements must be strictly of the same dimensions and therefore interchangeable. The problem of spares and replacements would be meet by making all the cell elements identical with the standard conical taper lugs, as at present used for the extreme terminals of the batteries. Though, in view of improvements latterly, it is rarely now necessary to change one cell or (set of plate sections) of a battery, nevertheless this course would provide for such a contingency.
