page x398 To Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} from RFC. EFC2/T21.4.22. x398 x4130 RE STANDARDISATION OF LARGER BATTERIES, ETC. FOR 40/50. Answering your Da{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}2/M12.4.22 we think you will find that Sales have for a considerable time advocated the use of a larger battery for the 40/50 car, particularly PN.{Mr Northey} It is difficult to find definitely in writing anything on this point, but we know they have put pressure upon us from time to time with this end in view. We know that Mr. Royce himself is hardly likely to agree unless he finds that the weight of opinion is for the change. There have undoubtedly been a few cases of customers who have not had sufficient lighting capacity in the batteries, but the exact extent of this trouble we find it very difficult to ascertain. Again, we cannot say that we have had any definite complaints from customers about the starting, though we have undoubtedly experienced difficult starting in cold weather in our own experimental dept., and no doubt this would apply to American conditions, only I suppose this does not now concern us. When I reported to Mr. Royce the result of bench tests of the standard starter motor wound with field coils two series two parallel, showing him that this made a more lively motor, he sent back a little note, copy of which we attach, and from which you will see that he rather advocated the standardisation of this scheme.
