X.2894 - TUNGSTEN CONTACT POINTS

XJ485

Herewith please receive copies of two reports dealing with endurance tests of Goshawk contact breaker and distributor.

These two tests were run largely with the object of effecting a comparison between the wear of continental bakelite and grey fibre rubbing blocks, but the second one was also run with the object of trying out tungsten contact points in accordance with Mr. Royce's request.

It will be seen that the wear on the fibre block is considerably less than that of the bakelite, but that on the other hand the wear of the fibre block produces fluff which is likely to interfere with the proper functioning of the contact points. It will be understood that no lubrication was supplied to the cam in either case.

Sets of tungsten points have also been run on some of the experimental cars, but results of these are not available at the moment. The tungsten points referred to in the test are sent for Mr. Royce's examination.

AN

Mr. Royce will also be interested in the blade taken from the rotor which was running on both these tests in addition to other runs, making an equivalent total of 2500 miles.
