To C.W. Hancock Esq. Hotel de France, Chateauroux, Indre, France. From Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Lid.{A. J. Lidsey} 85840 X.5840. X.3806. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Lid.{A. J. Lidsey}2/AD8.9.31. BIJUR PUMP FAILURE (19-GIV). The cause of this failure appears to be due to the cork washer shrinking to a diameter smaller than the diameter of the counterbore which normally locates it. We have examined some of our pumps here and find that all the corks have shrunk in a similar manner but none of them have been lifted by the piston on its upward stroke. The only useful purpose this washer serves is to lessen the shock of the piston hitting the bottom of the cylinder on the rare occasions when the tank is empty of oil, and we would like to try and delete the cork washer entirely. Will you please arrange to replace the cork washer in your tank by a metal washer of the same thickness (in order not to increase the stroke of the piston) and let us know if you can find any disadvantages.
