X 3751 To C.J. from Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} HsL/LGlC.3.20. X 3743 RE 2.EX CAR. X 3751 We find that Maddocks has not received instructions we sent as regards overcoming piston rattles on 2.EX Car. We have heard from him that he is now on his way to Spain but will be returning to Marseilles on the 14th. inst. to pick up Sir Edward Goulding. We are very anxious that the Car shall not be run with the piston rattles because it is quite an easy matter to over-come them. At any decent garage with help, Maddocks should be able to complete the job in 1 1/2 to 2 days. At present we do not know Maddocks' whereabouts. Could it be arranged that the following telegram be sent to him addressed to - C/o Sir Edward Goulding, Marseilles ? "PISTON RATTLES DUE TO CARBON BINDING TOP BAND OF PISTON STOP FIRST OPPORTUNITY REMOVE CYLINDERS SCRAPE CARBON OFF CYLINDERS AND PISTONS STOP FILE PISTONS IF NECESSARY".
