PHANTOM STEERING.
----------------

With reference to EJ7/E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} 19.5.26. and dealing with the items in the order given, our view of the position is as follows:-

1. EWT. is obtaining cost figures for changing the steering worm'nuts on the cars in question.

2. The parts removed cannot be used for present production.

3. As stated by Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}, we do not always know which R.R. cars may be taken to France or elsewhere abroad, but we do know that certain cars are sold to owners abroad, and that some cars will be used abroad in addition to being used in this Country. We understand that the cars it is intended to deal with are those which are at present in this Country and which we do definitely know are going abroad.

4. We certainly agree with the remarks made by Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} that we do not expect any R.R. owner to travel fast over bad roads.

5. Although as pointed out by Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} the .940 steering worm and nut have not been tested out, the Experimental Dept. have tried the .937, which is identical in construction.
The .940 steering worm and nut is a compromise which R.{Sir Henry Royce} suggested for dealing with complaints, as it can be applied without making a lot of scrap.

We have nothing to add to Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}' remarks in regard to Items 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11.
