X5310 E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} FROM R.{Sir Henry Royce} RL/Ms1.5.32. X.4553 X.5310 C. to SG.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} WOR.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} re BENSPORT HEAD. C. to DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} J.3. & BENSPORT GEARBOXES. I think your latest suggestion is the best - i.e. all bends looking one way, both in the exhaust inlet. For instance, if the inlets all look forward, the exhausts all look backward, and vice versa. We think it would be better to swallow the want of looking glass symmetry for the sake of the plugs, and one beloves the best cooling of the whole head. I also agree that the open type head would be better for this smallengine at least. I am inclined to think that J.{Mr Johnson W.M.} 3. should treated similarly. I would have spoken to you myself over the telephone but have gone to 'CamachaHenry Royce's office in West Wittering' to push forward the gearbox work which is pressing, (both the central change Bensport, and the L.H. J.3.). These will want somewhat similar treatment as regards the tower mechanism. J.{Mr Johnson W.M.} 3. is standing still for Bensport, but the latter will be finished I think this week.
