INDIA - 4 SPEED GEAR BOX.

Further to our memo AJS1/DB.{Donald Bastow - Suspensions}17.2.25, now that we have a radical cure for the working out of the gears of first and second speed, by reducing the splines to give a symmetrical drive, we propose running a further test of the first & second speed parts made as we think these should be for production.

As tried, the splines on shaft were so reduced as to leave the driving portions with areas as nearly as possible symmetrical about the centre of pressure on tooth above. This meant when in the neutral position the corners of the spline ends would be in the radius thus - on second speed end only.

FIG I.

As we consider that if this condition can possibly be avoided it should be, we now propose running a test with the reduced portion of splines shortened, so as to give a small area of bearing at each end on the unreduced portion thus -

FIG.II.

and find whether we still get the same satisfactory
