X.3398 - PETO & RADFORD BATTERIES. Y4414

The two P & R batteries of the thick plate type, P.D.L.9, and thin plate H.D.E.13 type, respectively, have now been opened up at Messrs. P & R's Works in the presence of our representative, and reported by them to us. We attach for your information copy of their report.

You will see from this report that Messrs. Peto & Radford now recommend from this examination a modification of their H.D.E.13 thin plate type, which they call their BD.{Mr Berend}11 "Bull Dog" type. We are accordingly now instructing the Order Office to order up three such batteries for further experimental purposes, these to be put on actual running tests at the earliest possible moment with a view to early standardisation for the 40/50 car.

For the Goshawk, Messrs. P & R have recommended their smaller battery of the same type, B.D.7. This battery will not go into the box which has been already designed to take the C.A.V Willard 12XR.2 battery on that chassis, and accordingly I have written Mr. Elliott to take up the question with you as to whether it would be possible to accommodate the longer box necessary for this purpose.
