High Duty Alloys Ltd., Buckingham Avenue, Trading Estate, Slough, BUCKS. For the attention of Mr. Richards. Dear Sirs, With reference to our recent conversation at your works concerning A.C.9 alloy. I have taken up the matter with our Laboratory re loss of magnesium after subsequent remelting of A.C.9 and the following may be of interest to you, although I do not know whether this information will be new to you. Firstly; it is agreed that there is a loss of magnesium after a remelt, and it is our standard practice to add 1 1/2 ozs. magnesium per 100 lb. melt, for each remelt. Secondly; an alternative would be to increase the magnesium content to 1.1% in the initial mix, as in a case say where it is known that Wellworthy's have to remelt once to produce bearings. It would seem that this point has some bearing on the degree of hardness to be obtained with this material, and I shall be very interested to hear your further comments. It is understood of course that heat treatment still stands at two periods of 12 hours each at 180°C.
