To BJ/PY. from E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} c. to Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} 43236 E2/M16.9.25. X.3692 X.3436 X.8230 RE, EXHAUST SYSTEM. AMERICAN CARS. Referring to your memo. BY/PY19/WESS.9.25., this matter was raised some time ago at WW. and it was pointed out that on the 'phantom' chassis, being unable to use the front silencer opposite the engine as on the Silver Ghost, we were compelled to obtain the necessary silencer capacity by other means. We therefore increased the rear silencer from 6" to 7½" in diameter, which we were enabled to do by tapering each end, and we also added a small silencer opposite the gearbox. Mr. Royce at the time asked Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} to see the drawings of our Phantom system were sent to America so that they could take advantage of the moves we had made to increase their silencer capacity in a similar way, by altering the rear silencer as we have done. In view of the Works report we do not know whether this information has yet been sent, but if not, the particulars of the Phantom system should be given to the American Co. with our recommendations.
