Rear Axle (Continued).

Bevel Pinion G.83892 modified to G.84710, was worn .0005" by the inner race of the hose bearing which had revolved on it. The inner race of the thrust bearing had also been turning on the pinion. The teeth were in good condition.

The Ransome and Marles No. 8 M.D.J.T.35. pinion thrust bearing was in good condition, no wear having taken place. The float was found to be .0005", and the nip on the bearing was .0015", the "nip" washer having worn .005". The Hoffmann R.M.S.9 roller bearing too, was in good condition.

The serrated nut, G.85169, which clamps the N.S. crown-wheel thrust bearing on the diff. box, was found to be very loose, allowing the bearing to float. This, of course, caused the crown-wheel to float and explains why the backlash varied from .005" - .013". The crown-wheel teeth were in good condition.

The crown-wheel thrust bearing, Hoffmann 350 C.D., had .004" float.

The differential box assembly was in good condition, wear being normal on all bushes and spindles. The thrust washers were also in good condition, wear being slightly less than usual. G.85172/3 strengthened axle shafts had not twisted.

All the hub bearings were in good condition, but both N.S. and the larger O.S. bearing inner-races had been turning on the axle tubes.

Rear Brakes LOP.G.83556. G.L.804.

With the exception of the O.S. bell-crank levers, the brakes and mechanism were in good condition. Both O.S. hand and foot brake bell-crank levers had seized, or were about to seize, through rust and the absence of lubrication. Only the lower-half bearing in each case was affected in this way, the upper halves being in quite good condition.

The N.S. bell-crank lever bearings and oilite bushes were in quite good condition and little or no wear has occurred in either the O.S. or N.S.
