WST x 6008 F3/JL.23.6.33. S/W To E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} from F.{Mr Friese} Copy to Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Wst.T 20/25 H.P. TANK ENGINES. (1) LUBRICATION. One of the tanks fitted with an R-R engine was recently in an accident in which it fell into a ditch with the nose down at an angle of 30° to 35°. In racing this engine to try to get out, 2½ gallons of oil came out of the engine into the tank floor - that is to say, the oil ran out at the fly-wheel end. The War Office have asked us to look into this matter to see if it would be possible to check the loss of oil through the fly-wheel bearing in order to cater for this condition, which admittedly is extreme. No damage was in this case done to the engine. (2) WIRELESS SCREENING. We understand that a letter has been sent to us with a copy to London (which, however, we have not yet received) stating that they do not propose to alter the system of screening which we have delivered, and are delivering under contracts received so far. (3) DYNAMO CAPACITY. The War Office desire to know whether it would be possible for our dynamo to look after the requirements of two batteries - that is to say our standard 12 volt 75 amp. battery, and also a 12 volt 100 amp. battery which is required for wireless purposes. We have asked for a letter giving us the precise conditions, but perhaps in the meantime this matter could be examined. F.{Mr Friese} | ||
