Handwritten: Y4005 Y4634 Y4587 [STAMP: RECEIVED] VALVE STEEL (SILCHROME). ALL ENGINES. Since I understand that we are having very good service from the above it would be dangerous to go to the high nickel soft alloy, or any other steel, without very long duration tests. Naturally we should examine and watch others, whether their results are good or bad. For instance, the Stutz seems particularly bad. It has occurred to me that we ought to Izod & Stanton test pieces from valves that have been long in heavy service. Possibly we ought to examine steel of even lower silicon than 3.35, and find how near we are to the boundary line: I mean, test for errosion, pitting, valve stem wear, etc, as well as reliable mechanical qualities hot and cold. This is one of the vital points of enormous importance. R.{Sir Henry Royce} | ||
