X1166 Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Bwg.{J. C. Bowring}10/KW. Exptl. Dept. 21st June, 1935. The Dunlop Rubber Co.Ltd., Fort Dunlop, Erdington, Birmingham. For the attention of Mr. Carr. Dear Sirs, New type Jack for Bentley Chassis. We thank you for your letter FRC/DWG.20.6.35, re the above. As explained by the writer on Monday last, the Jack in question was handed to a labourer in this Dept. for the completion of a series of straightforward jacking operations, when the screw stop and guide collapsed. The operator states that no excessive strain was applied to the Jack. He has since stated, however, that he thought the Jack was a three-stage type. I therefore assume he probably applied unnecessary force to operate a presumed third screw. It certainly does not seem feasible that a silver steel stop would shear under normal conditions, and I think we can safely continue with the use of these. With regard to the chipped guide slot, it would seem that this trouble can be overcome if we have a more positive and slightly strengthened stop on the Ram and in the guide slot itself. Apart from the fact that the chipping took place at the same time as the shearing of the screw stop we know nothing, and can only presume that it was forced more than we are led to believe. Yours faithfully, FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LIMITED. | ||
