HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} FROM E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} C. to SG.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} [Struck through] C. to BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} P. 2. CARBURETTER SILENCER Referring to the complaint of oil draining from the carburetter after a hard run on 23-EX. the only difference we know of to account for any change is the new silencer in which the depression on the breather pipe may be more than on the standard chassis. This higher depression would induce a larger flow of air or gas from the crankchamber and may have the effect of drawing oil into the carburetter. We have therefore made a design transferring the breather connection to the outer silencer tube, and we attach a blueprint of this - LeC. 2802. - to BY's copy of this memo. so that detail drawings may be put in hand at the earliest possible moment, as this feature is one that may affect the L.H. chassis as well. We shall send the original drawing as soon as we see R.{Sir Henry Royce} and obtain his sanction for the modification to design. Regarding the question of the loss of power experienced with the silencer we are preparing a separate drawing shewing modifications attacking the two biggest sources of loss, namely, the outer silencer tube, and the casing surrounding the extra air valve ports. In the meantime we should like to know if you have anything to add to your previous report as it may help us with our modifications.
