X. 295 - RE SMITH DYNAMOS

On Monday last, the 22nd. inst, we paid a visit to Messrs. Smiths, Motor Accessories, Portland Street, to ascertain the position in respect of the dynamo in which we are interested. We were driven to their Works at Cricklewood and shewn practically all over these works. We were received at Great Portland Street by Messrs. Nichols, Trier and Lock, and were taken round the works by Messrs. Nichols, Lock, Smith, and the Works' Manager. They have a good sized works at Cricklewood, employing 1800 hands, and the works are very nicely laid out, a considerable number of Gridley, and Brown & Sharpe automatics being in use. We saw quite a number of speedometer, switchbox, dynamo, and motor parts in quantity production on the various machines.

They made out that they were leaving nothing whatever to chance, but were adopting quality methods throughout in order to ensure the highest possible excellence in their products. They shewed us, for instance, considerable numbers of gauges in use in each stage of production of the armature shaft. Their idea, as they expressed it, is to become "The Rolls-Royce of Motor Accessories", and from what we saw, and so far as we are able to judge at present, they certainly seem to be going along on these lines.
