Notes of Meeting. Sg{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}1/H18.4.35 - 3 - Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} said that there was an alternative method of obtaining more power on the Bentley, i.e. by boring out the existing cylinders to 3½" and the general feeling was that this might be more satisfactory than supercharging the existing engine, although it would mean that the car would no longer be the 3½-litre Bentley. The Experimental Dept. have bored out a cylinder which was shown, but owing to very small clearances between the cylinder lining and certain holes, E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} did not consider that it would be satisfactory for production. However, the experiment will be a useful one because the larger bore could be achieved by alterations to the parts [illegible] which would give greater clearances at the points in question. Re Front Axle Control with the shock absorbers moved out, the design has been issued and detailed by HY.{Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer} Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} will, therefore, chase up the general position. Re design work in connection with reducing the arc of embrace. It was stated that this had been issued by HY{Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer}, and the same remarks apply as above. Re Brakes fading - for the reasons given in Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls}16/KW. 5.2.35 - the levers to overcome this trouble are on S-B-IV. Re Isolated Change Speed Gear to overcome rattles, this is on Lp{Mr Lappin}'s car and is being tasted on S-B-IV. HY.{Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer} will look into the question of how soon this will be introduced on production. Re Brakes, the complete Girling set-up of brakes has been tried on a Bentley car. The result is that we want to keep the external pieces but not the bits inside the drums. Re Piston Seizures - recent memoranda, E2/HP.12.4.35 and HY{Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer}/Oghl/G.12.4.35 were referred to. It was agreed that the modification should be introduced as quickly as possible, i.e. drilling the small hole in connecting rods of the drilled-up type on production. | ||
