TO BY. {R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} FROM AJS. C. to - CL. HS. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} 48305 AJS1/M20.7.25. EAC. 7. ENGINE COUPLING. We send herewith LeC. 2112. of the above, and the parts contiguous to same. In this coupling we have shewn 3 thin discs of fabric that are secured with plates and hollow rivets. We have shewn hollow rivets because we believe that in assembling the discs they should be put into a press (either hydraulic or screw) and tightly pulled together and thoroughly riveted up before removal from the press, and we consider that hollow rivets would be more easily and effectively finished than anything else. We understand that the 3 discs give a bigger factor of safety than one single one of equivalent thickness, which is our reason for adopting those shewn, and in order to further increase the factor of safety the coupling is larger than the one at present adopted for the EAC. chassis. Some time ago we sent you a modification to the clutch brake flange in which the milled spring was abandoned. You will note that in the above drawing we have utilised the space originally used for this for the driving sleeve attached to coupling. This has been necessary owing to the coupling being considerably closer to the clutch than hitherto. drawing We believe this completes all the information required from this (G) Dept. for EAC. 7. chassis, with the exception of the propeller shaft and universal joints, and in this connection we should like to hear the result of HS. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} tests on the Mechanic's joints being sent from USA., as we believe this should be a particularly oil retaining one, in view of which we have in hand some designs for an improved type of Mechanic's joint, which we expect to be forwarding to you shortly.
