| E.Dept. Sft.{Mr Swift} Roy{Sir Henry Royce}/Ms. Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} X236. BY5/W.25.8.33. Bentley Piston. Will you kindly note that owing to failures having occurred on the Bentley piston in France we should hold up all work on the production of pistons. The D.O. are looking into the question of the diameter of the lands between the rings to ascertain how and when the reduced dimension was introduced. In the meantime, we are awaiting further developments before releasing the pistons for production as apparently Mr.Elliott's piston to LeC.3493 may overcome the trouble and in any case it will be necessary to do something to modify the piston in order to clear the matter up. This memo overrides the list of parts agreed as being satisfactory, issued with the Standardisation Sheet. Pistons will now be a fourth item on the last sheet under the heading of being held up.
