Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Wst 86000. EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}12/MH.{M. Huckerby}25.5.36 re IGNITION PLUGS FOR "KESTREL" ENGINES IN SERVICE --------------------- We recently received a report from our tester Bate at Messrs.Handley Page Ltd (where "Heyford" machines are being turned out) that trouble was being experienced with the K.L.G. V7/3B plug, i.e. engines cutting out at full boost on the ground, and that by fitting Lodge A5.B the trouble was overcome. We were informed that Messrs.Handley Page and also the A.I.D. were taking up the matter with the Air Ministry and the manufacturers. We asked him to obtain further particulars of this trouble, and are now able to attach a copy of a report from Bate, dated 22.5.36. In the Points to Note referred to we have definitely recommended the use of A5.B and K.L.G.V7/3B plugs. The latter we have pushed as a more suitable plug than the former owing to the fact that you pointed out to us that it is likely to fulfil the general conditions, i.e. maximum boost, also would not oil up, etc. owing to being too cool under cruising conditions. You will note that according to Bate's report the A5.B plug has given no trouble, nor have we so far received any adverse complaints from the Service, although they have possibly not yet actually got into complete service. We should like your comments on this matter. You could also possibly follow up the information with the makers, as we do not wish to perpetuate using the plug if it is likely to give trouble. EP{G.
