X356 Beacon Hotel, Crowborough, Sussex, 13th July 1912. Mr Claude Johnson from F.H.R. With reference to the proposed clutch & fly-wheel, we ought to be contented with the 1¾" and not go to the 2" until we have proved that there is ^no disadvantage in the 1¾". We must not ^overlook these points. Unless the Sales Dept. insist upon the full amount, I should recommend a trial be made of the clutch shown in drawing G1919. Referring to the canvas covered clutch, I recommend that we abandon rivets entirely and use staples all over. If necessary we can ^slightly groove the aluminium so that the staples can carry the canvas down the whole surface. Also the wire of the staples can be flattened on the topleaving the round shank to pass in the round holes. If this scheme still gives any trouble, I should try on the outer and possibly on the inner edges a complete band of strong steel music wire anchored at one end and passed ^slightly ^more ^than ^once round over the canvas on the outside, and then passed inwards round a suitable little fitting which can be made in the form of a rachet wire stressing device so that the wire can be pulled up very tightly all round the canvas. Such an arrangement might be used in the form of a spiral or in the form of say 3 or 4 such bands dragging the canvas in the grooves cutting the aluminium. I should principally recommend ^a ^trial for finishing off the inner and | ||
