Hanbury - Head Complaints} 15.9.26. 4-o 16/9/26 SHOCK DAMPERS. ---------------- The Experimental Dept. have informed me in a memo Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}2/LG. 15.9.26. that it is essential we should fill the hydraulic type shock dampers with a different type of oil from that which up to the moment has been used. So far we have been using an oil known as 'Motorine 'C''. In future we shall use a special oil which for the moment we will speak of as 'Compressor' oil, the designation arising from the fact that it represents a grade of oil for viscosity etc. which is regularly used on air compressors. We will select a type of oil and instruct same for general use. It is most important we should carefully filter the oil at the moment of introducing same to the shock damper, as the slightest foreign matter in the oil will certainly cause trouble. In filtering the oil, we recommend heating the oil up to about 75oC in order to make it flow very readily, and pass same through an adequate filter of the finest practicable mesh. Will BY/NW.{N. Walker - Patents} kindly note the above, and see that the question of filtering any oil before adding same to the shock damper is strongly emphasized, also the necessity for cleaning away all dirt from round about the filler plug before attempting to remove same for the addition of further oil.
