Dear Mr. Robotham, I am very much obliged to you for your letter of September 24th advising us of the grades of the new Shell Oils which you will be specifying in your Instruction Books in future, and we shall take all steps necessary to ensure that all our own literature is brought into line. If there are any other points which may need consideration perhaps we could meet some time during the forthcoming Motor Show, and I will be glad to keep any appointment with you if you will let me have a day or so's notice. A matter which I think might interest you is covered by a copy of a letter from Bentley Motors Ltd., which I attach, which was brought to our attention by Messrs. Longman's Garages, who are customers of ours, because they could not understand why it should be suggested that National Benzole Mixture would have a higher anti-knock value than an Ethyl petrol. We have, of course, told them that we consider a mistake was probably made in typing the letter they received. In actual fact all the Ethyls on the market today are some seven to nine Octane Numbers higher than National Benzole Mixture, and if Bentley Motors Ltd. meant to say a petrol-benzole mixture it would be necessary to specify that something like 50% straight benzole was added to a straight No.1 spirit (of approximately 73 O.N.) to attain the anti-knock value of current Ethyl petrols.
