REPLACEMENTS. PIVOTS

3/3/13. Standing Order to examine all pivots for cracks.

17/3/13. Tests made with P.2352/3 - "The results of these tests seem to point that the present pivots are safe..... The first thing to go is the cross tube leave... the next thing is the bolt which holds the levers together and which spigots the spring to the axle."

18/3/13. R.{Sir Henry Royce}& J.{Mr Johnson W.M.} written - "Mr Nadin and myself have, on considering the matter together, issued instructions to replace all old type pivots by the reinforced type that Mr Hives has just reported on (P.2352/3) as a temporary expedient"

18/3/13. Standing Order issued as above.

20/3/13 R.{Sir Henry Royce} writes - "Although the pivots that they are now manufacturing are better than the original ones they are not so good as can be made for the same weight. We must therefore wait for new dies before making any more forgings for any purpose."

31/3/13. Standing order to replace C.471/2 by C.471A and C.472A, but forgings not yet obtained from makers.

2/4/13. Hives made comparative test in which P.2352/3 proved themselves much stronger than older type.

24/4/13. We wrote Mr Nadin for confirmation that series 700 were not to be replaced and for a list of weak pivots and those designed to replace them.

28/4/13. E.D.S. replied - "I do not think that it is my place to instruct Works on what cars to replace axle pivots. A list given of which pivots are interchangeable, without any opinion as to which should be changed.

4/5/13. We were unable to get instructions elsewhere and have instigated fresh experiments on C.471/2 and F.2352/3. (forgings of C.471A and C.472A not yet obtained by Order Office).
