We have encountered a difficulty on the pivot lubrication. At present, in order to protect the annular passage which meters oil to the pivot bearings, all the oil passing to the pivot system is filtered where it enters the axle forging. Apparently the quantity of oil going through this filter is such that it rapidly chokes up, because after 2,500 miles we find that these filters will only pass a fraction of the quantity of oil for a given pressure that they did in their original condition. In any case such a large quantity of oil is needed for the pivot system that a filter of the standard drip plug size would seem inevitably to offer too great an obstruction to the oil flow at this point. On the other hand, the annulus passage round the stand pipe will obviously get put out of action quite as easily as a drip plug by foreign matter.

We suggest, therefore, either that a felt filter of special design is provided for the whole pivot unit having three or four times the area of the present one, or a separate small filter is provided for the stand pipe.

We have gone over all the other drip plugs on the car and so far find the filters have not choked up though we are using Motorine C. in the system.
