SECRET. TO HY.{Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer} Copy to Dr. [redacted], Jur. [redacted] SHC. HPS.{Horace Percy Smith - Experimental Factory Mgr} RSJ/FLS.{F. Llewellyn Smith - Frames} R/EV.{Ivan Evernden - coachwork}9/LN.2.2.37. 200B 427 Bentley III Frame Cross. We send herewith LeC.5481 and LeC.5482 showing respectively the plan and elevations of the frame cross for Bentley III. On LeC.5482 we show the Wraith II gearbox in position in the car and also the removal of the same. The frame cross consists of an upper and lower shearing of large dimensions, and eight simple pressings demanding small dies. We understand that this may not be any more expensive than the Wraith II construction, but it is forced upon us by the fact that we cannot tolerate the increased height of the Wraith II vertical welding flanges if we are to make a Bentley car no higher than the present one. We have shown the pitch of the main spot welding as being 1" on the straight and ¾" on the curves. This corresponds to our original recommendations for Wraith II. As you are aware we are trying the coarser pitch of spot welding on the third Wraith II frame and if that proves satisfactory we shall wish to use that coarser pitch on the Bentley III. The gauge of the cross is 16 gauge .064 mild steel. EV.{Ivan Evernden - coachwork} Att:LeC.5481. LeC.5482. | ||
