TELEPHONE: 24447/8 TELEGRAMS: HEPO, BRISTOL OUR REF NCB/ER. DATE 6/3/39. Messrs. Rolls-Royce Ltd., DERBY. For the attention of Mr. Swindall, Chassis Experimental Engineer. Dear Sir, With reference to the recent visit of our Mr. W. A.{Mr Adams} Wilson and Mr. C. Mallinson, when a discussion ensued concerning Phormicast piston rings, we are pleased to hear that you have agreed to test some of these rings experimentally, and this letter is to inform you that the rings are already in hand, and we hope to despatch them within the course of the next few days. We have also checked over the piston you loaned to our Mr. Mallinson and we find it will be necessary to provide for a slightly deeper groove to receive the Phormicast ring than is your standard practice, and we have therefore pleasure in enclosing herewith a sketch illustrating the ring grooves that are required, and also the radial thickness of the rings we propose to supply. As you will be aware, these rings are cast to form and generally no internal machining is necessary. A high and low limit is shown for the radial thickness, and we are generally successful in maintaining these rings up to the high limit shown. Our Mr. Wilson will be glad to co-operate with you technically on any point that may arise whilst you are making this test. We are, Yours faithfully, HEPWORTH & GRANDAGE LTD., N.C.Brearley, Director.
