SECRET File Spec 2 Mem. from Mr. [Illegible] to Mrs. [Illegible] Im.6/T.28.6.40. NOTES ON GUN CONFERENCE AT LITTLEOVER. On Monday, June 24th.1940 DESIGN POSITION. This conference was called in order to decide whether or not a small quantity of 40 mm. guns should be manufactured with a view to using them for ground defence on aerodromes. 1. It was reported that the 40 mm. gun had been fired success- fully from a fixed mounting. The design of the shoulder rest and sight had not been completed but it had been demonstrated with a temporary arrangement, that the gun was very easy to handle and could be laid accurately. The design of the single shot loading also requires to be completed. It was agreed that the design work outlined above should be completed as soon as possible, and that an experimental gun be completed to these designs. In the meantime, all parts of the gun not affected by these modifications should be produced up to a total quantity of 25, which is the limit of the barrel rifling and boring capacity which so far has been found to be available. 2. BARREL PRODUCTION. The Royal Ordnance Factory, Notting- ham, have agreed to bore and rifle 25 barrels in a period of one month, provided forgings are supplied without delay. Some discussion centred round the actual yield stress of the material. It was finally decided that if the material passed the following material tests it would be adequate for existing design of barrel. - Continued - | ||
