I have only today received a copy of your note BY8/P5.8.19. the original was apparently mislaid between your office and mine. As we have in hand material for the whole of the 500 chassis, which is only suitable for the 18 galls. tanks, it is clear that we must use this up and bring in the 20 gallon tank on the 501 st.{Capt. P. R. Strong} chassis. Presumably the increase in length quoted in the 2nd. paragraph of BY8/P5.8.19, of .950" will give us some appreciable increase in capacity - perhaps a little over 1/2 gallon. Our programme is therefore to fit 18 gallon tanks for the first 500 chassis and in a fortnight from now these tanks will be suitable for fitting new type shock absorbers, and the 20 gallon tank will be brought in on the 501 st.{Capt. P. R. Strong} chassis, by which time the experimental work on the new fittings for the internal tube shewn on LeC.1105 will I hope then be completed, in which case, if successful, this will also be incorporated on the 501st. chassis. I believe this clears up the petrol tank question. The present position as regards scheme shewn in LeC.1105 is that Mr. Day has instructed this experimentally in Mr. Hives Dept. The parts have now to be made and tested before decision can be given for production.
