To Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} X1113 Cricklewood - 13.7.36. R.R. Exhaust Suspension. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Wym.{G. Harold Whyman - Experimental Manager}18/KW.10.7.36. In reply to your request for further information regarding rattles in the tail pipe suspension, I would like to point out that the measurements given were taken from an actual case, GUL-19. We agree with you that if these supports were made to the dimensions you give, namely, .150" spring travel and a clearance between the end of the tube and the plate of .200", there would be no trouble here with the exception of the rattle between the two tubes 'A' and 'B' which you say is being looked into. The point we wish to make is that these measurements are not or were not being adhered to on production. On the two 30 H.P. R.R. cars here at present there is just sufficient clearance when spring is compressed, i.e., about .010", whereas on two 25 HP. cars, GOH-81 and GTL-3, the tube definitely comes in contact with the plate, the clearance in the rest position being barely .140".
