-2- loose. There must however, be a very big load on the bolts. CLUTCH. When the gearbox was dismantled this week end, there was no sign of oil from the rear of the engine. The clutch was perfectly dry and in a fine condition. There was a slight leak of oil from the front end of the gearbox. CYLINDER HEAD. From the amount of carbon on the cylinder head and on the tops of the pistons, we should definitely say that there is no claim in Hall's mixture. We did not disturb it, so that you can judge for yourself when the car returns to the works. The inlet valves had a mushroom growth of carbon on the underside of the head, more than we have previously seen. SILENCER. The front end of the silencer has again cracked. From its appearance it has apparently gone inwards, but the silencer had been brought forward to its full extent, the swing arms of the brackets of the rear were hard up against the frame. The silencer otherwise was free to swing. The most probable cause is the metal the silencer is built with is too weak, and the heat at the front end weakens it still more. RE. DAMPERS. The heads of the bolts are not of sufficient area and place a local strain on the frame. To overcome this on the N.S. we are fitting a plate on the outside, approx twice the area of the bracket end.
