Engine cylinder leaks and observations after an 18-hour test run.

No.6 A.{Mr Adams} Leak from back of exhaust flange after 9 1/2 hrs. running. Vertical seam on Inlet side after 16 hrs. running.

No.1.B. Leak from water inlet boss before engine was run. Inlet side vertical seam leaked after 12 1/2 hrs. running.

N.2. B. Leak from back of inlet flange 9 1/2 hrs, running.

N o5 B. Inlet flange leaked after 10 hours. Exhaust " " " 12 1/2 ".

No.6 E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} Inlet flange leaked after 3 1/2 hrs. running.

We stopped the engine after 18 hrs. running because the leaks were so bad. On 2 or 3 of the cylinders the vertical seams had a split 4 or 5" in length. Every leak on these cylinders occured in the actual welding of the joint. We cut sections out of some of the cylinders and found the depth of weld on the vertical seams and round the valve bends was very thin .. We took another set of American cylinders and fitted them to the engine with the following
