[Handwritten text replacing a struck-through sentence] In the case of the foot brake which is the outside one, it will be found necessary to remove the link operating the side brake before it is possible to take out the bolt so that the foot brake can be adjusted. The adjustment can then easily be made by screwing the jaw end further on the rod. The most important point to watch in this adjustment is to see that there is sufficient clearance for the brakes after they have been adjusted. To prove this it should be possible to move the lever which is operated by the brake rope and normally rests against the axle tube, 1/8 or 1/4" before the brakes bed hard on the drums. It is very important to make sure that this clearance exists. It is not sufficient to rely on the clearance in the foot pedal because this may be due to slack in the ropes which would be lost movement and would be no guide as to whether the brakes had the correct clearance.

Side Brake Adjustment. In the case of the side brake, the sole adjustment is on the back axle and is carried out in a similar manner to the foot brake. [Handwritten note:] It will be found necessary to remove the rod operating the foot brake before it is possible to take out the bolt to adjust the handbrake.

Clutch adjustment. In the case of the clutch slipping it is important to examine the adjustment of the clutch operating mechanism to see that it has clearance. To do this, remove the aluminium cover in the flywheel housing which is held on by four nuts. Inside on the face of the clutch can be seen four levers which, when the pedal is depressed, take the spring pressure off the clutch. The point to notice is to see that there is clearance between the clutch trunnior bearing and these levers when the clutch is engaged so that the pedal mechanism is not preventing the full pressure of the springs coming on the clutch. If any adjustment is found necessary, the four set screws, one of which will be found on each lever, should be adjusted. It is necessary to see that the adjustment is equal on all levers.

Tappet adjustment. The tappet adjustment can be got at by removing the covers on the exhaust side of the engine. It is also necessary to remove the cover on the top of the engine. The cover can be lifted off bodily after (1) three milled-head holding-down screws are released (2) terminal will be found on the dashboard which connects the wire to the ballast resistance - the wire should be released on this point (3) the spring clips holding down the high tension distributor should be unclipped and the top portion of the high tension distributor carrying the six-plug wires and centre wire should be lifted off. The cover then, as a unit, with the coil and wires, can be lifted clear of the car. The tappets should be checked by a feeler between the roller and the head of the valve. We anticipate that on 7-Goshawk-ll there will be found flats formed on the rollers. In the case where there are flats, extra clearance will have to be given so that in the event of the roller turning round on to the full diameter, it will still have the necessary clearance (.004").

Sparking plugs. The spark gaps on the plugs should be adjusted to .025".
