x5840 Hotel de France, Chateauroux, FRANCE. To Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} From G.W.H. 5/12/31. 18.G.IV. Our exhaust manifold cracked after this morning's run whilst the car stood in the garage. It has broken in exactly the same place as the two manifolds did on 19.G.IV. The last time we dismantled it we noticed that it had contracted and it was difficult to get on the studs. The failure is on the underside of the pipe and the crack extends half way round. The mileage is 8800. It has therefore, lasted almost 4000 miles more than previous manifolds. It would seem, therefore, that a freer exhaust is beneficial but does not overcome the trouble, neither has the stay fitted on the downtake pipe. We have a spare manifold here which we are fitting. We have been expecting a new exhaust manifold out as you have mentioned in your memo, but so far there has been no indication of it having been sent. We think we ought to have the latest scheme from W.W. so as to try and settle the manifold question. ---- Please note that in our memo of 27/11/31 a headline ran - Shock dampers fouling cross steering tube v This should have read - Shock Dampers fouling side steering tube.
